Wildlife Sanctuary in Ontario

Our partner will place you at a wildlife sanctuary in the province of Ontario, near Canada’s Great Lakes. This animal rescue center specializes in the care and rehabilitation of both small and large animals. Its team, made up mainly of volunteers, needs year-round support to care for and rehabilitate injured animals and rescue orphaned wildlife. Working with the animals at the sanctuary is physically demanding. The minimum stay is 4 weeks to allow the animals to get to know you and build trust. One month is considered the minimum time needed to become familiar with their daily routine.

The Sanctuary Relies on Volunteers

Volunteers are the backbone of the organization. This wildlife sanctuary is run by a dedicated team of volunteers who make it possible to care for the animals. Eco-volunteers are expected to take part in all activities related to the sanctuary.

Your tasks may include feeding animals, preparing food, cleaning, doing laundry, administering treatments, participating in construction projects, painting, and more.

Here are some examples of the daily tasks you may be involved in:

  • Tube-feeding and hand-feeding animals
  • Administering medication
  • Providing basic first aid
  • Handling and restraining injured and orphaned wild animals
  • Keeping animal records up to date
  • Observing and recording animal behavior
  • Maintaining and organizing the rehabilitation center
  • Raising public awareness
  • Carrying out minor repairs to cages and enclosures

The project requires a commitment of 6 days per week and 8 hours per day.

The sanctuary hosts between 3 and 5 volunteers at the same time.emps.

  • Smoking is not allowed on the property
  • A strong work ethic is required: reliability, responsibility, honesty, good sense of humor, dependability, and good physical and mental fitness
  • No animal allergies
  • Up-to-date tetanus vaccination required
  • Good physical stamina and overall good health
  • A love for animals and general experience in animal care are essential
  • Volunteers must read and agree to follow the sanctuary’s guidelines and ethical standards
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good level of English required
  • A valid driver’s license is an advantage, but not mandatory

Accommodation

Eco-volunteers will live in a dormitory-style lodge located on the sanctuary property. The accommodation includes a living room, kitchen, and dining area. Laundry facilities and a fully equipped kitchen are also available.

You will spend one night in a hostel in Toronto before heading to the project site.

Food

Volunteers can cook their own meals in the volunteer house.

Location

The project is located in the heart of Ontario’s “cottage country” in a fairly remote area. There is no bus service in the region, but you will have opportunities to visit nearby towns for shopping and supplies. Several lakes are located nearby.

Arrival

You will arrive in Toronto and spend your first night in a hostel.

You will then travel by bus to the project site, where you will be picked up at the nearest bus station. On your final day, you will return to Toronto for your flight home.

Of course, you may extend your stay in Canada to travel or visit other cities, and we can help you organize tours and/or accommodation.
