Protecting turtles on Nusa Penida in Indonesia

The programme takes place on the island of Nusa Penida, located about 45 minutes by boat from Bali. This sea turtle conservation centre welcomes international volunteers as part of a sustainable tourism initiative. Founded 13 years ago, the project aims to treat injured turtles, collect eggs to hatch them safely, and then release the baby turtles when they are ready to survive at sea.

An example of a volunteer’s day

  • 7.00 am: breakfast at the camp with the other volunteers.
  • 8.00 am: departure for the sea turtle conservation centre. Possible activities: cleaning the pools, feeding the turtles, creating awareness-raising signs, beach clean-up.
  • 11.30 am: free time or a chance to relax by the sea.
  • 1.00 pm – 2.00 pm: lunch
  • 2.30 pm: continuation of project activities or a visit to natural sites (beach, mangrove forest, natural pool, etc.).
  • 7.00 pm: a convivial dinner followed by a group activity (campfire, documentary, free time, games).
