Protecting sea turtles at Chacahua in Mexico
The partner organisation supports sustainable development and biodiversity conservation initiatives in the Oaxaca region of Mexico. It works with local communities by providing assistance with:
- Wildlife conservation;
- The development of environmental workshops for children and English language classes;
- Tree planting in private and public areas;
- Beach clean-ups;
- The promotion of ecotourism.
The partner supports ecotourism-related development projects and works with local communities to protect species such as sea turtles and crocodiles. It supports three sea turtle protection projects that welcome volunteers, including one in Chacahua, with an Afro-Mexican community. You will join the team that protects sea turtles and their nests against poaching, keeping the eggs in hatcheries until they hatch.
Night patrols, nest monitoring…
You will join a sea turtle protection project fighting against poaching in Chacahua, Mexico. Together with the local community, you will take part in various activities: beach patrols, monitoring turtle nests in the nursery, beach clean-ups, tree planting, and data recording.
Example of an eco-volunteer’s day. Please note that tasks may vary depending on the weather and current needs.
- 7:00 – 7:30: checking for hatchlings in the hatchery with the local guide.
- 8:00 – 9:00: breakfast.
- 10:00 – 12:00: various tasks may be assigned: supporting the local team in the hatchery by cleaning and recording data, environmental education workshops, beautification projects.
- 12:00 – 16:00: lunch and free time.
- 17:00 – 19:00: various tasks may be assigned: helping release baby turtles, environmental awareness activities with tourists, beach clean-ups, maintaining a clean nesting area for turtles, tree planting…
- 18:00 – 19:00: dinner.
- 22:00 – 3:00 or 3:00 – 6:00: night patrols. You will patrol the beach to spot nesting turtles, count eggs in nests, accompany the supervisor during the collection and placement of nests in the nursery, record data, and dig the holes where the nests will be placed in the nursery.

- You will live on the beachfront (swimming possible) in a location that is off the beaten track, yet well known among surfers;
- You will be involved in a community-based sea turtle protection project;
- This programme includes one activity per week: a surf lesson, a night tour to see bioluminescence in the water, or a day with a beekeeping project in Chacahua National Park;
- In winter, it is possible to spot leatherback turtles, the largest turtles in the world!
- You will experience the atmosphere of an Afro-Mexican community.

- You must be open-minded and flexible in the face of itinerary changes due to social or weather-related circumstances;
- Between 1 and 12 weeks;
- English: intermediate level.
Food Mainly vegetarian and Mexican. Menus can be adapted to intolerances and allergies if needed. Meat is served alongside some meals.
Accommodation Camping tent + air mattress + sheets (supplement +€70/week for a room).
Arrival Airport pick-up at Puerto Escondido airport before 16:00 on Mondays.
What to bring
- A backpack rather than a suitcase, and a small daypack;
- Comfortable clothing for warm weather;
- At sunset, loose trousers covering the legs are necessary to avoid using repellents, as well as long-sleeved shirts. A cap or hat;
- A sweatshirt for night patrols, from November to February;
- A waterproof jacket if travelling from June to October;
- Comfortable shoes: trainers or boots for walking in the forest, sandals, and flip-flops for the shower;
- Towel and toiletries: shampoo, body soap… the team recommends solid and as natural as possible products;
- Swimwear (long-sleeved swimsuit to avoid sunscreen in the water), swimming goggles;
- For mosquitoes, the team recommends essential oils: citronella, lemon eucalyptus… instead of chemical repellents. (Nothing works 100% there, so travel with loose clothing that covers your body);
- A small first aid kit for your personal needs;
- Earplugs and a light sheet for camping;
- A reusable water bottle! Please, let’s avoid plastic.

About the partner organisation
The partner is a Spanish non-profit organisation that supports local communities working towards environmental preservation and ecotourism development in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. Tartarakus was founded in 2021 by Beatriz, who, after several years spent on the Oaxaca coast as a student and volunteer, wished to strengthen the impact of the local population in terms of sustainable development. The organisation offers various volunteering experiences in the least visited areas of the Oaxaca coast.
