Ecotourism to avoid exploiting and destroying the landre

The partner organization supports sustainable development and biodiversity conservation initiatives in the Oaxaca region of Mexico. It works with local communities by providing support for:

  • Wildlife conservation;
  • The development of environmental workshops for children and English classes;
  • Tree planting in private and public areas;
  • Beach clean-ups;
  • The promotion of ecotourism.

Tartarakus supports ecotourism-related development projects and works with local communities on biodiversity protection. Among these communities is the village of Manialtepec. Most of the village’s inhabitants were dedicated to livestock farming and agriculture. They produced fruit, vegetables, milk, cheese, corn… Until the day a family ventured into ecotourism, to show their own community that it is possible to live off the land without exploiting it.

Horses at the heart of the project

Subsequently, many groups began setting up activities, thus launching ecotourism as a way of making a living. Previously, they used horses to transport tools, harvests or themselves. Today, they have changed their relationship with horses. The horses are only used a few days a week for ecotourism activities, and live freely in nature the rest of the time.ps.

Immersion in a rural village surrounded by horses in Mexico

You are part of a local community that lives in a traditional way, surrounded by free-roaming horses. This community owns 50 hectares of biodiverse forest that requires manpower for reforestation and the development of conservation activities. There will be additional activities depending on the community’s work: you can help teach English classes, lead environmental workshops with children, make traditional cheese or bread, clean hiking trails, reforestation activities…

Example of a daily schedule

  • 8 AM – 9 AM: breakfast
  • 10 AM – 12 PM: you lend a hand to the team for all activities: English teaching, horse riding, hiking, agriculture-related activities, creating informational materials on environmental protection, cooking, children’s workshops. What to bring

  • A backpack instead of a suitcase, and a small daypack.
  • Comfortable clothing for warm weather.
  • At sunset, loose trousers covering the legs are necessary to avoid using repellents, as well as long-sleeved shirts. A cap or hat.
