Wildlife sanctuary in Hawaii
Head to Hawaii to join a wildlife sanctuary. Our partner, Fronteering, will place you in a sanctuary on the Big Island, which takes in injured or abandoned animals such as zebras, falcons, owls, flamingos, reptiles and many other endangered species. The project also has an educational component aimed at the island’s children. Its aim is to help foster a generation that respects the environment. To this end, the team highlights the fragility of ecosystems, whilst giving visitors the chance to observe the animals up close.
Animal care, environmental education
As a volunteer, you will be involved in most of the sanctuary’s projects, covering both animal care and environmental education.
Your main responsibilities will include:
- Feeding young mammals with a bottle, and young birds by hand
- Preparing food for animals that feed themselves
- Clean the animals’ cages and the various facilities at the centre
- Help with the housework
- Volunteers who know how to use tools safely can also help to repair or build cages and other structures.
- To raise awareness among visitors and the local population of the fragile ecology of the Hawaiian Islands and the behaviour of the animals
- Caring for injured wild animals and returning them to the wild in the best possible condition
- Looking after the resident animals
The work is intense and physically demanding. Shifts last 8 hours.
The team expects you to commit to working 5 to 6 days a week, 8 hours a day.

About the partner organisation
Our partner is a Canadian organisation founded in 2010, specialising in overseas volunteering projects aimed at preserving the environment, wildlife and indigenous communities. It offers placements all over the world, but thanks to its Canadian base, it provides numerous experiences with a positive impact in North America. It also focuses on the least-visited places on the planet. Places that still boast rich biodiversity and where you can immerse yourself in a world that remains wild. Our partner strives to offer volunteering experiences off the beaten track. Adventure awaits!
