Environment and Health Project in Iceland

Our partner offers volunteering placements at various locations across Iceland, focusing on biodiversity conservation, peace-building and the promotion of volunteering. The main aim of the projects is to raise awareness among local and international young people about sustainable development in their daily lives. This project takes place in Hveragerði, a small town of around 1,700 inhabitants located 45 km east of Reykjavík. Hveragerði sits atop a highly active geothermal field, which provides heat to hundreds of greenhouses where fruit, flowers and vegetables are grown all year round. In fact, the name Hveragerði means ‘garden of hot springs’.

So that everyone can take charge of their own health

Our partner will place you with a non-profit organisation called the Rehabilitation and Health Clinic (NLFI), which is part of the Natural Health Association of Iceland. Each year, the Rehabilitation and Health Clinic treats around 2,000 patients through rehabilitation programmes that focus on building self-confidence and empowering patients to take charge of their own health. Since its establishment in 1955, the clinic has built a solid reputation, both in Iceland and internationally, for the personalised and effective care it provides to its patients. Volunteers work within the horticultural department. Volunteers do not work directly with patients.

The volunteer takes part in gardening and workshops on climate change

As a volunteer, you will be working in the horticultural department of the Natural Health Association. This includes forestry, gardening and greenhouse work. Volunteers work in the greenhouses planting and harvesting vegetables, as well as tending the gardens. You will be introduced to organic farming by taking part in the entire process, from planting to harvesting. You will also learn how to grow various herbs. This project also includes workshops on climate change. You will develop your knowledge of green energy, waste management and the effects of diet on health.
Working hours are generally from 8 am to 3 pm, and volunteers are entitled to a one-hour lunch break.
