Erosion control project in Krýsuvík within a Geopark
Our partner offers volunteering opportunities at various sites across Iceland to protect biodiversity and promote peace and volunteering. The main aim of the projects is to raise awareness among local and international young people about sustainable development in their daily lives. The Krýsuvík project takes place in the Geopark. This geothermal and volcanic area is in south-west Iceland, on the Reykjanes Peninsula, around 35 km from Reykjavik. The name Krýsuvík means ‘Krýsa’s Bay’, after a character from a local folk tale. This Geopark has been recognised by UNESCO since 2015. The project aims to combat erosion by revegetating the land using organic waste and planting trees across an area of 300 hectares. As the Geopark is criss-crossed by hiking trails, the project may also be required to maintain these trails.
Re-vegetation of the site in Krýsuvík
The volunteers’ main task is to combat erosion and replant the land. The site covers 300 hectares and forms part of the Iceland Geopark. Soil stabilisation is achieved by planting trees and using organic waste. You will be involved in these various activities, including monitoring the plants from previous years. You will also be involved in renovating the five large greenhouses located near the volunteers’ house. Your work will depend on the weather! Be prepared to face adverse weather conditions!
Environmental workshops
Another aspect of the project is to raise volunteers’ environmental awareness through a series of workshops, discussions and visits. The educational coordinator will be responsible for leading the sessions. You will attend between 3 and 4 workshops per week. This volunteering programme will help you become an environmentally conscious traveller and consumer!
Working hours are approximately 5 hours a day, 5 days a week.
