Restoration of Mustangs in Florida, USA
Mustangs were introduced to the United States by the Spanish in the early 1500s as domestic horses. These horses subsequently formed a large wild population and played a vital role in the development of America. Today, as they are no longer needed for work or transport, their situation has deteriorated and many are mistreated and exploited by humans. In the early 1900s, the wild Mustang population was estimated at over 2 million. Today, only 40,000 remain in the wild and roughly the same number in captivity.
Mustangs living in captivity are often mistreated
Our partner is a Mustang rehabilitation centre in Florida. Mustangs are considered wild horses, although they are a species that was once domesticated. Caring for a wild horse is radically different from caring for a tame horse. This is why Mustangs living in captivity are often mistreated. The centre’s mission is to provide a temporary and, in some cases, permanent sanctuary for wild Mustangs that have been abused, abandoned, neglected or confiscated.
The Mustang remains a wild horse
The rehabilitation centre also works to raise awareness and understanding of the wild Mustang. It offers courses for Mustang owners, organises workshops on Mustang care and training, and holds seminars on Mustangs in American history… This project needs eco-volunteers all year round! It is situated amongst ranches, forests, lagoons, wetlands and the ocean

About the partner organisation
The Wild Horse Rescue Centre is a recognised non-profit organisation in the United States. Founded in 2001 by Diane Delano, the centre is dedicated to the protection and rehabilitation of American mustangs. These horses, taken from their natural habitat through round-up programmes or rescued from situations of abuse, find refuge here and the opportunity to gradually reintegrate into human society. The WHRC also works to raise public awareness of the plight of mustangs through educational programmes and local events. The centre’s approach is ethical, progressive and deeply committed.
