The wildlife conservation programme in Kenya is ideal for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. You’ll have the opportunity to help conserve giraffes, birds and other wild animals.
Conservation programme in Kenya near Lake Nakuru
Kenya is renowned for its ecological diversity and its wildlife, which roams freely across the savannah. The diversity of its ecosystems provides an ideal habitat for wildlife. Kenya offers an unforgettable experience for lovers of nature and the great outdoors!
Wild animals, particularly the most iconic ones such as elephants, giraffes and zebras, play a vital role in the country’s economy. However, coexistence between the population and wildlife is not always easy.
The relationship between humans and animals at the heart of the project
Many isolated communities live in close proximity to predators, leading to conflicts between humans and wildlife. In response to this recurring problem between the communities of certain villages and wild animals, numerous organisations have been set up. Their aim is to manage these conflicts, in particular by establishing conservation areas. The conservation programme you will be involved in is located near Lake Nakuru, one of the lakes in the Rift Valley. This region is renowned for the vast colonies of flamingos that come here to feed and for its white rhinos. As an eco-volunteer, you will take part in the various conservation activities carried out by the team on site. You’ll have the chance to admire the breathtaking scenery whilst observing the diverse wildlife!
Volunteer work in Kenya
As a volunteer, you will take part in a wide range of activities, such as monitoring Rothschild’s giraffes, an endangered species. You will contribute to ongoing research efforts by collecting data on their behaviour and habitat, with a view to ensuring their survival. You will take part in a range of activities to monitor the local flora and fauna: conducting surveys of different species, monitoring, fitting collars, and more.
Cross-cultural immersion
You will always be accompanied by a wildlife specialist whilst working at the conservation site. These ecosystem conservation professionals will provide you with training throughout your stay. You will develop your skills in a wide range of topics related to environmental protection and learn a great deal about the challenges of human-wildlife coexistence, particularly through your interactions with the local community. You will indeed have the opportunity to engage with the local community within the reserve and gain valuable cross-cultural experience.
Your timetable from Monday to Friday
You will spend 4 to 5 hours in the reserve with the wildlife ranger, monitoring, counting and tracking wildlife, and assisting local staff where necessary. Back at your accommodation, you will have time to plan your activities for the following day.
