Set off on an adventure in the heart of the Balkans, in Montenegro, following in the footsteps of the lynx and the wildlife of Prokletije National Park. All scientific expeditions here
This scientific expedition in search of the lynx in Montenegro takes place in the country’s newest national park: Prokletije. You will explore the Hajla mountains accompanied by wildlife experts, whilst strictly adhering to a scientific protocol. For twelve days, you’ll be exploring fabulous mountain landscapes, searching for various signs of wildlife.
Your role in the scientific project ‘On the Trail of the Lynx’
Every day, you’ll be accompanied by a science educator who will guide you around Prokletije National Park. You’ll set up camera traps in the best locations and look for signs of animal presence – such as droppings, hair or footprints – to add to the database. During this expedition, you’ll be an integral part of the research team. You’ll learn to follow scientific protocols for monitoring wild animals, set up camera traps, identify faeces and footprints, and track animals… You’ll be trained in the use of equipment such as: camera traps, GPS devices, sampling equipment, binoculars, walkie-talkies, hiking maps, etc.
The scientific programme for the mission to Montenegro
On the trail of the lynx in Montenegro. The Balkan lynx is classified as ‘critically endangered’ on the IUCN Red List. In the 1990s, scientists believed it had become extinct. However, research carried out around a decade later proved that a few individuals had survived. Today, there are thought to be around fifty of them in the Dinaric Alps.
In the heart of Prokletije National Park
To gain an accurate picture of the lynx population and the biodiversity of Prokletije National Park, it is necessary to carry out surveys of the flora and fauna. However, due to a lack of resources, the authorities are unable to complete all the surveys required to protect endangered species. That is why the NGO OSI has organised the ‘In the Footsteps of the Lynx’ expedition. All the data collected during the expedition has been entered into a database, which is shared with Prokletije National Park and the Ministry of Sustainable Development.
