A day in the life on a Kenyan farm

The farm is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Since opening to the public in 2008, it has adopted an environmentally responsible approach by carrying out initiatives to protect biodiversity and support the development of the rural area of Subukia. Its team studies the behaviour of the wild animals found on the site, particularly that of monkeys. A survey of birds, trees and medicinal plants is also being carried out. Initiatives are also being undertaken to manage waste in the village and the surrounding area.

The role of eco-volunteers on a farm in Kenya

During your stay at this eco-friendly farm in Kenya, you’ll take part in the daily activities there:

Property maintenance (fences, roofs, gardening, maintenance work, etc.)
Inventory of animal and plant species;
Study of the behaviour of domestic and wild animals (in particular that of the monkey families (colobus and guenons), but also tree hyraxes and birds);
Production of harnesses specially designed to minimise pain inflicted on donkeys, and the implementation of public awareness campaigns.
Initiatives at the nursery school supported by the farm through its association, ASES (Aid and Support for the Children of Subukia), which was set up in 2009.
Waste collection during visits to villages and nature sites.

Dates and prices

2-, 3- or 4-week programmes. All year round. Arrival preferably on a Saturday morning; departure on a Friday evening.

€880 per person for 2 weeks
€1,220 per person for 3 weeks
€1,440 per person for 4 weeks

These prices include: accommodation, food, filtered spring water, all supervised and guided activities (including leisure activities, local excursions, etc.), and transfers to and from Nairobi airport (you will be met on arrival).
These prices do not include:
airfare, taxes, visas, insurance, safari surcharges, extras of any kind, alcoholic drinks and soft drinks.

A basic level of English is required to take part in this project. However, there are several French-speaking members of staff on site. There is no age restriction.
Accommodation in twin-bed bandas with en-suite bathrooms, fitted with solar panels for electricity (there is now mains electricity as well). Meals are served at the lakeside restaurant (serving local and international cuisine).
The programme is led by Jackson and Edwin, qualified nature guides specialising in African wildlife, and by Erick when he is in Kenya, as well as by our local guides and rangers. The programme is supervised by Astrid, the director, who is a qualified vet and biologist, an animal communicator, an energy therapist, a personal development facilitator, an author and a speaker.

This eco-volunteering programme offers an introduction to equine zooanthropology (building relationships with horses) as well as an introduction to animal communication, when the co-director is present.
You will learn Kiswahili, as well as the customs of the Kalenjin, Kikuyu and Maasai peoples.
You will have the opportunity to take part in cultural excursions (a visit to a tea and coffee plantation, a trip to the Igana viewpoint, a visit to the Village of Mary Basilica, a visit to the Franciscan mission in Lower Subukia, a visit to a craft centre for people with disabilities, and a visit to the village of Subukia…). Safaris will be available at an additional cost in Nakuru and the Maasai Mara National Parks: explore African wildlife. Wildlife watching and photography.

Eco-friendly holidays

For those who are unable to commit to an eco-volunteering stay, the eco-friendly farm organises stays lasting between 7 and 11 days. These eco-tourism breaks offer a variety of activities, combining interactions with local people, cultural visits, walks, an insight into the local way of life, farm activities involving animals, and photo safaris in parks and reserves to observe wildlife. These trips are suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Price for a 7-day eco-friendly holiday: €1,620 per person based on 2–3 people, €1,470 per person based on 4–5 people.

About the partner organisation

Our partner is a responsible tourism organisation offering eco-volunteering placements, founded by two French nationals in 2008. Their projects are based at Muringa Farm, in the Subukia Valley, between Nakuru and Nyahururu. The team’s values centre on species conservation and the preservation of biodiversity. The whole team respects all living things and promotes the protection of biodiversity. The project is carried out in collaboration with local communities.
