Care and Protection of Native Turtles in Ontario, Canada

Help protect Ontario’s native turtles! Take part in the protection and conservation of these turtles and their habitats in beautiful Canadian landscapes. The project, where you will be placed by Fronteering, operates a “turtle hospital” dedicated to treating, rehabilitating, and releasing injured turtles back into the wild. The project is also involved in conservation research and educational programs to raise public awareness about the protection of these land turtles.

Turtle Hospital

The project runs an ecovolunteering program to support its mission. You will have the opportunity to assist the team in many different ways: transporting injured turtles in need of urgent medical care, feeding them, cleaning enclosures, and more. Injured turtles usually stay at the shelter for up to one year before being released.

Within the project, turtles will be your priority! You will provide assistance based on your interests and skills. A number of tasks will be assigned to you:

  • Cleaning turtle tanks
  • Weighing turtles to monitor their health
  • Feeding the turtles
  • Participating in the public education and awareness program
  • Assisting with fundraising activities
  • General maintenance of the hospital site: sweeping, mowing the grass, tidying workspaces, preparing equipment for staff and volunteers
  • You may also take part in releasing turtles back into their natural habitat

The work can be demanding and is not for you if you are looking for an easy holiday.
