Why not try your hand at a renovation project in Iceland this winter? It’s the perfect opportunity to see the Northern Lights! See all our projects in Iceland here
Erosion control project in Krýsuvík within a Geopark
Our partner offers volunteering opportunities at various locations across Iceland, focusing on biodiversity conservation, peace-building and the promotion of volunteering. The main aim of the projects is to raise awareness among local and international young people about sustainable development in their daily lives. The Krýsuvík Renovation and Northern Lights project takes place in the Geopark during the winter. This geothermal and volcanic area is located in south-west Iceland, on the Reykjanes Peninsula, approximately 35 km from Reykjavik. The name Krýsuvík means ‘Krýsa’s Bay’, named after a character from a local folk tale. This Geopark has been recognised by UNESCO since 2015. The project aims to combat erosion by revegetating the land using organic waste and planting trees across an area of 300 hectares. As the Geopark is criss-crossed by hiking trails, the project may also be required to maintain these trails.
Renovation and the Northern Lights
In winter, the weather conditions make it impossible to work outdoors. Volunteers therefore help with renovation or maintenance tasks, such as painting or carrying out minor repairs inside the house.
By joining this project, you will become part of a team supervised by qualified site managers and play a hands-on role in creating new community facilities, refurbishing buildings and strengthening local infrastructure.
Painting, cleaning, carpentry…
The tasks assigned will be tailored to each participant’s profile. They will mainly involve repair work, painting and cleaning, as well as an introduction to the basics of carpentry and construction. Depending on requirements, you may also be asked to restore furniture, maintain outdoor areas, sort and organise equipment, or reuse materials for recycling purposes to benefit the centre.
A project for everyone
Your commitment plays a key role in the project’s continuity. You will be able to see the tangible results of your involvement, building on the work carried out by previous teams and contributing to the site’s long-term development. Tasks are determined based on the community’s actual priorities, which means the programme may change. This project is particularly suited to those who enjoy working outdoors and physically demanding activities.
Winter is the ideal time to see the Northern Lights
The experience isn’t limited to the construction site: the Icelandic winter is also the ideal time to see the Northern Lights. Photography enthusiasts, curious travellers and those keen to meet people from around the world will find this a unique adventure. Throughout the trip, we’ll keep an eye out for the right conditions to try and catch a glimpse of—and photograph—this spectacular phenomenon. We recommend bringing a camera capable of long exposures, as well as a tripod, to get the best results.
