Before setting off on an eco-volunteering trip

An increasing number of travellers wish to take action towards a fairer and more environmentally friendly world in their spare time. In response to this trend, a wide range of participatory holidays has emerged. Whilst the growth of the concept of ‘meaningful travel’ is excellent news – particularly as an alternative to mass tourism – the sheer number of options has made it harder to choose which projects to get involved in.

Define your project clearly to ensure its success

The success of an eco-volunteering trip and the sense of fulfilment upon returning depend largely on the gap between individual expectations and the reality on the ground. Clearly defining your travel plans and objectives is therefore a crucial step before setting off!
Some eco-volunteers want to complement their university studies, others want to make the most of their retirement, whilst others are looking for a family experience!
No one option is better than another; it’s simply a matter of finding the one that best suits what you’re looking for.

Assess your abilities properly so you can push your limits further!

Going on an eco-volunteering trip can be a life-changing experience! You’ll gain confidence and new skills, and your outlook on the world is likely to change! However,
it’s important to assess yourself before you set off on certain points, such as your ability to live in a community, your English language skills, and your willingness to step outside your comfort zone.

Preparing thoroughly before a mission

An eco-volunteering trip requires preparation, as it is a commitment – a contribution on your part to the protection of biodiversity. It is important to prepare thoroughly: practise your foreign languages, keep fit, and familiarise yourself with the administrative formalities…
