The wildlife conservation project in Namibia gives you the chance to get involved at a wildlife sanctuary right in the heart of the savannah. The centre takes in injured or orphaned animals, provides them with care, and then releases them back into the wild. All eco-volunteering projects in Africa
History of the wildlife project in Namibia
The clinic was originally set up to help the San people by providing them with free healthcare. The catalyst for the creation of the sanctuary was the tragic and needless death of a San baby in 2003. The nature reserve and animal sanctuary took on their current form in 2007.
The foundation aims to preserve Namibia’s land, cultures and wildlife and, above all, to create jobs for all those who were cared for by the clinic.
The foundation’s values
- Peaceful coexistence between humans and animals, or at the very least, a reduction in conflicts arising from their interactions;
- Respect for the environment, the protection of wildlife, including fauna, and the promotion of these;
- The promotion and defence of the concept that nature belongs to no one but itself;
- The integration of local cultures, particularly those of the Bushmen, into conservation projects;
- The adoption of innovative methods for the protection of wildlife and natural habitats.
Conserving wildlife in Namibia
Whether you’re a fan of the great outdoors or simply an animal lover, this project is for you! Unforgettable experiences await you in the heart of Namibia! Located 45 km from Windhoek, the sanctuary is nestled in the Namibian bush. By providing care for the animals and offering shelter to endangered or orphaned species, the centre is there to give them a second chance. Once they have recovered, the animals are released back into the wild; only the weakest or those that have become too ‘humanised’ remain residents of the sanctuary. And in the field of animal welfare, the organisation you’ll be working with has gained worldwide recognition.
Your work at the wildlife reserve
Life on the savannah is fraught with danger for animals of all species!
Whether they are large predators such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs, caracals, or natural prey such as warthogs, antelopes and baboons, as well as numerous birds, small mammals and other farm animals, the sanctuary provides them with the necessary care or protection in the event of injury or threat.
But all this care and treatment requires manpower: the contribution of interns and eco-volunteers is therefore invaluable. Their help, as well as their commitment to wildlife conservation, ensures the project’s long-term viability, contributing to the survival and development of the sanctuary!
To enable volunteers to gain as much experience as possible, without causing any harm, a group rotation system has been put in place.
Some of the daily activities include
- The preparation of animal feed;
- Cleaning the enclosures;
- Monitoring of animal welfare;
- The construction of new facilities;
- Research and study work: monitoring wild animals, analysing data collected by cameras and GPS devices.
