Tropical rainforest protection

Founded in 2002, this non-profit private reserve protects more than 220 hectares of high-altitude tropical rainforest. Its conservation work is built around three main pillars: reforestation, scientific research, and environmental education. Since its creation, the site has planted over 50,000 native trees while ensuring the preservation of the primary forest adjacent to Chirripó National Park

The volunteer’s role

Depending on your profile and the duration of your stay, you may take part in a variety of activities:

  • Reforestation: planting native trees, maintaining reforested areas, monitoring natural regeneration
  • Maintenance & infrastructure: trail upkeep, building maintenance, composting, waste management
  • Education: guided tours, activities for groups and schools, local awareness programs
  • Scientific research: data collection on fauna, flora, and biodiversity (for stays of 12 weeks or more)

Working hours: Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. (weekends free)

Each week, two team meetings are held to assign tasks based on participants’ interests, skills, and project needs.

  • Remote site located 2.5 km walk from the village of San Gerardo International atmosphere with multilingual supervision (English required, Spanish useful)
  • Maximum capacity: 16 participants at the same time
  • Arrival on Sunday Access: bus from San José to San Isidro, then car transfer to San Gerardo (organized by the reserve)
  • Every Wednesday, volunteers prepare their grocery list (local shop + supermarket), and the team handles the shopping San Bernardo village is a 30-minute walk away, with bus connections to San Isidro
  • A full immersion in a high-altitude tropical rainforest

During your free time, you can go hiking, observe birds and mammals, discover the lush flora, or simply enjoy the peace and quiet of nature. The region is known for its mountainous landscapes and iconic peaks, such as Cerro Chirripó, the highest point in the country.
