Environment and health project in Iceland
Our partner Worldwide Friends offers volunteer missions at various sites in Iceland to protect biodiversity, promote peace and volunteerism. The main aim of the projects is to raise local and international young people's awareness of sustainable development in their daily lives. This project takes place in Hveragerði, a small town of around 1,700 inhabitants located 45 km east of Reykjavík. Hveragerði sits atop a highly active geothermal field, which supplies heat to hundreds of greenhouses where fruit, flowers and vegetables are grown throughout the year. Indeed, the name Hveragerði means "hot spring garden".
So that everyone can take charge of their own health
Our partner will place you in a non-profit organization called the Rehabilitation and Health Clinic (NLFI), which belongs to the Natural Health Association of Iceland. Each year, the Rehabilitation and Health Clinic welcomes around 2,000 patients for rehabilitation programs, focusing on building self-confidence and empowering patients to take responsibility for their own health. Since its foundation in 1955, the clinic has earned a solid reputation, both in Iceland and internationally, for the personal and effective care it provides to its patients. Volunteers work in the horticultural department. Volunteers do not work with patients.
Volunteers take part in gardening and climate change workshops
As a volunteer, you'll be working in the horticultural department of the Natural Health Association. This includes forestry, gardening and greenhouses. Volunteers work in greenhouses, planting and harvesting vegetables, and gardening. You'll be introduced to organic farming by taking part in the whole process, from planting to harvesting. You'll also learn how to grow different herbs. The project also includes workshops on climate change. You'll develop your knowledge of green energy, waste treatment and the effects of food on health.
Working hours are generally from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and volunteers have a one-hour lunch break.
