Geopark erosion control project at Krýsuvík
Our partner Worldwide Friends offers volunteer missions at various sites in Iceland to protect biodiversity, promote peace and volunteerism. The main aim of the projects is to raise local and international young people's awareness of sustainable development in their daily lives. The Krýsuvík project takes place in the Geopark. This geothermal and volcanic area is in south-west Iceland, on the Reykjanes peninsula, about 35 km from Reykjavik. The name Krýsuvík means "Krýsa Bay", a local folk tale character. This Geopark has been recognized by UNESCO since 2015. The project aims to combat erosion by revegetating the land with organic waste and planting trees, over an area of 300 hectares. As the Geopark is crossed by hiking trails, the project may be required to maintain these paths.
Krýsuvík land revegetation
The volunteers' main task is to combat erosion and revegetate the land. The 300-hectare site is part of Iceland's Geopark. Soil stabilization is achieved by planting trees and using organic waste. You'll be involved in a number of different actions, including the monitoring of plants from previous years. You'll also be involved in renovating the five large greenhouses near the volunteer house. Your work will depend on the weather! Be prepared for adverse weather conditions!
Environmental workshops
Another aspect of the project is to raise volunteers' environmental awareness through a selection of workshops, discussions and visits. You will attend between 3 and 4 workshops per week. This volunteer program will help you become an environmentally conscious traveler and consumer!
Working hours are approximately 5 hours a day, 5 days a week.
