Restore the forests of Portugal!
You'll be joining a forest conservation program to rehabilitate degraded areas around Lisbon, Portugal. The aim of the project is to restore forests by replanting endemic species. Forests and natural parks play an essential role in the ecological balance of ecosystems. Forests regulate the climate, control soil erosion, filter water, sequester carbon and help purify the air!
Regeneration of forest ecosystems
The program you are about to join aims to restore natural areas destroyed by human pressure. Its aim is to regenerate soils and forests by reintroducing endemic species. The aim is to restore ecosystems as a whole by reintroducing biodiversity. Activity is seasonal, so depending on the time of year, the work undertaken varies. Depending on the season, activities focus on planting, maintenance work or combating invasive species.
The role of ecovolunteers varies according to the season
Your work will involve restoring ecosystems, reducing environmental damage and promoting biodiversity. You will work with local volunteers and project coordinators. Your action will have a real impact on forest regeneration. You will discover different areas and forests and undertake different actions depending on the season: planting, maintenance work.
Examples of daily tasks
- Invasive species control: applying techniques to manage invasive alien species that threaten natural areas.
- Planting and maintenance: plant native species using a variety of methods, mainly in autumn and winter, and maintain planted areas.
- Biodiversity protection: protect biodiversity niches and manage footpaths.
- Conservation efforts: participate in conservation efforts in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and other natural ecosystems.
You arrive on Sunday. Monday is a day devoted to presenting the project and getting an initial overview. You'll get an introduction to the local culture, program details and safety.

This ecovolunteering trip is your chance to discover Portuguese culture and its capital, Lisbon! Lisbon is a lively and colorful city! The capital is renowned for its historic monuments and vibrant culture. It is heavily dependent on tourism, which, while stimulating the economy, leads to overcrowding, pressure on public services and environmental degradation.
