Bio construction and permaculture on a farm in Sumatra

North Sumatra is a province of Indonesia with a particularly rich biodiversity. The region is famous for Gunung Leuser National Park, home to a primary forest where orangutans still live in the wild. However, the region is under heavy anthropogenic pressure from palm oil monoculture, which impoverishes the soil and pollutes the rivers. The region's economic difficulties have also given rise to illegal activities such as poaching. Our partner Ibu Bumi Orangutan's mission is to study and protect the rainforest of North Sumatra through programs run in collaboration with local organizations.

Forest ecosystem restoration

Among these organizations is the Juma Coffee farm, located in Pamah Simelir, on the edge of Gunung Lauser National Park. This farm, created by a German-Indonesian couple, protects access to the national park to limit poaching, and is developing several activities such as soil regeneration, ecotourism, coffee cultivation... A large part of the property's 30 hectares is dedicated to restoring the forest ecosystem with its incredible biodiversity. The owners are in fact carrying out a reforestation program on plots that had been cleared for timber trees.

Permaculture development

In the non-wooded areas, activity is focused on the construction of terracotta houses and the development of permaculture.
With Martin and his wife Maria, you'll enjoy an unforgettable experience as you take part in the farm's various activities.

Eco-building, permaculture, education...

You'll share the life of a German-Indonesian couple on their farm, located on the edge of Gunung Lauser National Park, in the mountains at an altitude of 1,000 meters.
Every day, you'll take part in a variety of activities, including :

  • Eco-construction;
  • Reforestation of plots of land formerly used for mono-cropping palm oil;
  • Support for organic coffee plantations;
  • Teaching English to the local community;
  • Installation of camera traps;
  • Permaculture;
  • Renewable energy...
