Research on the coral reefs of Nusa Penida

Our partner Ecotourism Nusa Penida runs a marine conservation program in partnership with Kelompok Nuansa Pulau, a community actively involved in coral restoration in Nusa Penida, Indonesia. Indonesia is part of the Coral Triangle, an ocean area that includes Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and the Solomon Islands.

Indonesia belongs to the coral triangle

The Coral Triangle is home to the world's greatest marine biodiversity. It is home to 30% of the world's coral reefs, 76% of reef-building corals and over 35% of reef fish species. It is considered one of the world's most important biodiversity hotspots. Ecotourism Nusa Penida conducts research on coral reefs (over 90,000 corals have been planted). The organization runs a coral planting and mangrove restoration program. It also supports seaweed farming, the blue economy and waste sorting, and is developing initiatives to raise awareness of biodiversity protection in schools.

Developing resilient tourism

The partner organization is based on ecotourism. Its aim is to move from destructive mass tourism to resilient tourism. Engage local communities by creating jobs around the blue economy. It offers positive-impact solidarity stays and internships for people wishing to make a long-term commitment.

The partner organization offers a long-term program open to trainees and a week-long participatory ecotourism program open to families.

The week-long conservation program

This program combines daily conservation and educational activities with tourism of your choice. During this week-long conservation program, the team will teach you all aspects of successful marine conservation. You'll experience coastal ecosystem rehabilitation, a local blue economy, environmental education and ecotourism.

During this week, you can

  • Snorkeling and diving with manta rays
  • Learn how to rehabilitate coral reefs
  • Replanting a mangrove forest
  • Growing seaweed and supporting the local community
  • Teaching and raising awareness among local schoolchildren
  • Visit the best sites on the three Nusa islands, and much more besides!

The long-term preservation program

Conservation programs can be followed for several weeks or even months. Long-term internships are organized to better understand all aspects of conservation programs: education, blue economy, citizen science projects and marine ecology courses.

Your duties will include

  • Identify corals, reef fish families and other marine animals.
  • Participation in citizen science projects, including 3D photogrammetry.
  • Participation in the creation of an education program for schools
  • Participation in the maintenance of coral reefs and coral nurseries.
  • Work on different conservation projects and experiment with different restoration approaches.
