Our partner Fronteering will place you in a horse rescue center located near the Rocky Mountains in Alberta. This rescue center is currently home to over 170 horses, most of which have been rescued before slaughter.
The center covers 16 hectares. It focuses on horses, but is also home to pigs, llamas, goats, ducks, chickens and many other species.
Eco-volunteers play an essential role in the rescue center, contributing to the well-being of animals that have suffered mistreatment in the past.
The work you will be asked to do can be physically demanding. This project does not allow horse riding!
Taking care of horses and other animals at the center
Ecovolunteer work is very important to the operation of the rescue center. You'll be involved in a wide range of tasks for the horses and other farm animals. This requires commitment and work that can be physical. Please bear in mind that this horse rescue center does not allow for horseback riding.
Here are the main tasks you will be entrusted with
- Feed preparation and feeding of horses and other livestock
- Checking horses' health
- Grooming
- Assistance to veterinarians and farriers
- Filling feeders and loading/unloading hay or fodder
- Fence repair and paddock cleaning (manure collection).

- Must have experience with horses.
- No allergies to animals.
- Good physical condition (able to lift heavy loads and do manual work)
- Smoking is not permitted on the property.
- A strong work ethic is required: reliable, responsible, polite, self-sufficient, enthusiastic, honest, good sense of humor, dependable, physically and mentally fit.
- Harsh weather conditions (heat and cold)
- Ability to live in an isolated environment
- A love of animals and general experience of animal care are essential, as are patience and ease in the presence of mammals and birds.
- You must read and agree to abide by the project guidelines and ethics.
- Good communication skills, ability to work independently and good knowledge of English.
- A valid driver's license would be an asset, but is not mandatory.
- Work with horses in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

Housing
You'll stay in the guesthouse, which comprises a bedroom, kitchen and living/dining room. The accommodation is rustic and clean, with standard furniture and fittings.
Food
You'll have to prepare your own meals. We'll suggest you go to the grocery store to buy your food.
Takeaway
Be prepared for all kinds of weather conditions.
Bring gloves, sturdy shoes (preferably waterproof) and clothes you don't mind getting dirty (because all the animals will be delighted to brush up against you and say hello!) There's a volunteer clubhouse on site, with toilets, a kitchen and a library. You're welcome to bring any books or magazines you'd like to share or donate.
