Are you passionate about paleontology? Come and learn about excavation techniques in southern England and take part in a real research program. All scientific trips here
Paleontology field trip project
This scientific trip takes place in southern England, in Dorset, one of Europe's richest regions for dinosaur and prehistoric reptile fossils. The sites, world-renowned for their Jurassic and Cretaceous discoveries, offer an exceptional immersion into the history of life on Earth, set against spectacular coastal landscapes.
Jurassic Base Camp
Designed as an accessible alternative to high-altitude expeditions, the Jurassic Base Camp trip is part of a research program launched in 2014 in partnership with the Geneva Natural History Museum. It allows participants to take part in practical fieldwork while testing and perfecting techniques used at other sites, such as excavation, identification, mapping, photogrammetry, and the use of drones.
Identification of fossils
For seven days, you will be immersed in the life of a real paleontology apprentice. You will learn techniques for excavating, cleaning, and identifying fossils, and you will participate in interpreting discoveries and writing up results. You will also keep a logbook based on your field notes to share the progress of the project and your scientific adventure.
During this stay, you will be able to
- Learn about the excavation techniques used by paleontologists and search for fossils dating back to the age of the dinosaurs.
- Learn how to organize and document your discoveries, while drawing your favorite fossils and dinosaurs.
- Discover laboratory work: cleaning, preparing, and identifying fossils.
- Visit iconic sites and places: the Mary Anning Museum in Lyme Regis, the Dinosaur Museum in Charmouth, and the Natural History Museum in Geneva.
- Learn how to orient yourself in the field and recognize the different geological layers corresponding to the major fossiliferous periods.
- Explore the terrain and encounter modern-day animals whose distant ancestors lived during the time of the dinosaurs.
- Dive into the fascinating world of fossils and prehistoric life.
Everyone will participate fully in the research program and camp life. Day-to-day management is an integral part of the adventure: preparing meals, organizing equipment, assigning tasks, etc. Like true explorers, you will share all the responsibilities that come with a scientific expedition.

The team
Supervision will be provided by a team from our partner organization. The educators have a dual role: to ensure that the expedition runs smoothly and to share their knowledge through an educational approach based on experimentation and active participation in the project. Specializing in paleontology, geology—or both—they are also trained in project-based teaching and group management. Their goal is to support you both scientifically and personally throughout your stay.
Accommodation
In 2025, this trip is offered exclusively to teenagers. Accommodation will be in tents and/or bungalows at a base camp set up upon arrival. The entire team will live on site and prepare meals together. The camp is ideally located near the main excavation sites, which limits travel time and allows participants to make the most of their time in the field.
Location
Located three hours from London, the seaside towns of Charmouth and Lyme Regis are iconic for paleontologists. The beaches are must-see stops for all dinosaur hunters.
You'll gravitate toward this sunny region, sometimes by the sea, sometimes further inland.
