Preserving ecosystems on the island of Syros
Apano Meria, which covers almost 45% of Syros, is a NATURA 2000 protected area known for its natural beauty, biodiversity and history. It is characterized by steep rocky hills, secluded beaches and traditional dry-stone terraces.
It is untouched by mass tourism. The region is home to rare flora and fauna, important geological formations such as eclogites and glaucophanic blue shales, and major archaeological sites such as the ancient settlement of Kastri and the necropolis of Chalandriani. Its ecological, geological and cultural value makes Apano Meria an essential conservation and heritage area. Our partner's aim is to preserve and protect the island's natural and cultural heritage, with particular emphasis on Apano Meria.
The action of the eco-volunteer
Four types of mission are proposed
Environmental policies and legislation
The environmental policy and law research program. Our partner carries out comparative research into the legal and political provisions and practices in force in different countries around the world in environmental matters (protected areas, renewable energies, endangered species, etc.).
Traditional primary production practices
Participate in agricultural activities that respect dry Mediterranean environments: permaculture, compost, water saving, monitoring of experimental micro plots.
Ideal for discovering agriculture in an arid climate.
Plastic Recycling and Reuse (Precious Plastic Syros lab)
Artisanal recycling of plastic collected on the island, via the Precious Plastic program: sorting, crushing, molding and creating objects useful to the community.
A practical and instructive workshop to discover the circular economy.
Hands-on activities with the cooperative
Versatile support: trail maintenance, building renovation, logistics, signage or administrative tasks, depending on the needs of the moment.
An accessible mission, at the service of the collective.
Your research will contribute to the creation of an open-access scientific database on Cyclades ecosystem issues, as well as to the publication of information documents and policy proposals.
