Mediterranean - Embark on a unique scientific expedition aboard a research sailboat, and make an active contribution to preserving marine ecosystems. A total immersion in life at sea, alongside passionate biologists. More marine wildlife missions here.
Study of marine flora and fauna in the Mediterranean
Project Manaia is an itinerant marine research initiative that travels the Mediterranean aboard a sailboat. Each season, the crew carries out 11 series of 12-day cycles, during which observations and data collection are carried out on various aspects of the marine ecosystem.
The five main areas of research are
- Mapping Posidonia meadows: Assessing the distribution and health of Posidonia oceanica meadows, essential to Mediterranean biodiversity.
- Invasive species monitoring: Monitoring the spread of non-native species, particularly those introduced via the Suez Canal, and assessing their impact on local ecosystems.
- Plastic pollution: Collection and analysis of marine litter, identification of areas with high concentrations of debris, and participation in clean-up actions.
- Observation of marine megafauna: Monitoring marine mammal and turtle populations, and studying their relationship with the health of underwater habitats.
- Citizen science projects: Involvement of volunteers in data collection and awareness-raising, promoting a better understanding of marine issues.
A typical day as an eco-volunteer
The days are punctuated by research activities (snorkeling, observations, data collection) in the morning and late afternoon, with free time in the middle of the day to rest or take part in life on board.
Your tasks include :
- Snorkeling transects to study seagrass beds and invasive species
- Marine waste collection and sorting
- Observation and recording of megafauna species
- Participation in the maintenance of research equipment
- Contribution to daily tasks on board (meal preparation, navigation, maintenance)
- Period of operation: April to September
- Duration: 12 days on board (disembarkation on day 13). Embarkation ports are different from disembarkation ports.
- Price for non-students: €1,550 (includes accommodation, meals on board, and supervision)
- Student rates: on request
- Travel insurance not included
- Travel to port of embarkation not included
