Wildlife refuge in Hawaii

Head off to Hawaii to join a wildlife sanctuary. Our partner Fronteering will place you in a sanctuary on Big Island, which takes in injured or abandoned animals such as zebras, hawks, owls, flamingos, reptiles and many other endangered species. The project also has an educational component for the island's children. Its aim is to contribute to the development of an environmentally-friendly generation. To this end, the team highlights the fragility of the ecosystems, while giving visitors the chance to observe the animals up close.

Animal care, environmental education

As a volunteer, you'll be involved in most of the sanctuary's projects, from animal care to environmental education.

Your main tasks will include :

  • Bottle-feed young mammals, hand-feed young birds
  • Preparing food for self-feeding animals
  • Clean the animals' cages and the center's various facilities
  • Help with household chores
  • Volunteers who know how to handle tools safely can also help repair or build cages and other structures.
  • Educate visitors and locals about the fragile ecology of the Hawaiian Islands and animal behavior
  • Caring for injured wild animals and returning them to the wild in optimal conditions
  • Looking after resident animals

The work is intense and physically demanding. Shifts last 8 hours.
The team expects you to commit 5 to 6 days a week, 8 hours a day.

About the partner organization

Fronteering is a Canadian organization founded in 2010, specializing in overseas volunteer projects aimed at preserving the environment, wildlife and indigenous populations. It has trips all over the world, but thanks to its Canadian base, it offers many positive-impact experiences in North America. It also focuses on the least-visited places on the planet. Places that still have a rich biodiversity and where you can experience a world that is still wild. Fronteering strives to offer volunteer experiences off the beaten track.
