Protecting sea turtles in Cairns, Australia
Get involved in the protection of sea turtles in Australia. Today, the lives of sea turtles are under serious threat, particularly those of green, flatback, hawksbill, olive ridley and loggerhead turtles. Most are victims of "floater syndrome". They have been injured by boats and derelict fishing gear, or have digested marine debris thinking it was food.
Turtles come from the Great Barrier Reef
Our partner Fronteering will place you in a rehabilitation and care center for injured sea turtles in the Cairns area. The turtles you'll be caring for come mainly from the Great Barrier Reef and Cape York Peninsula! Their injuries are mainly due to human factors. To preserve these sea turtles and their habitat, the rehabilitation center, established in 2000, works closely with several conservation groups, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and EPA National Park Rangers. The rehabilitation center's facilities consist of a pre-release center located on an island. The rehabilitation center relies on volunteers and donations to keep the project going!
