Marine conservation and underwater waste collection project in barcelona

Barcelona has been a city open to the Mediterranean for centuries, with a maritime tradition dating back to Roman times. However, its urban development and close relationship with the sea are having an impact on its coastal seabed. Indeed, the presence of large quantities of marine debris threatens marine species and ecosystems. The Catalan capital's openness to the sea, with all its activities, poses a great risk to the seabed. By joining this marine conservation project, you will have the opportunity to explore and contribute to the preservation of Barcelona's coastal ecosystems.
You will become involved with a non-profit diving club, whose social and environmental impact is positive. You'll be supporting efforts to conserve the seabed by reducing ocean pollution. During the summer, you can also take part in camps for children in difficulty, assisting them with their dives or developing workshops on the sea and the environment.

Clean-up of marine debris and study of marine flora and fauna

You'll join a marine conservation program through which you can explore Barcelona's coastline. This program is ideal for sea and environment lovers. You'll gain experience in scuba diving and environmental protection. You'll learn about the challenges facing the marine ecosystem in the face of pollution and urbanization. You'll contribute to the survival of the Mediterranean seabed and its flora and fauna.

Here's an example of the daily tasks you'll be expected to perform

  • Clean up marine debris using diving equipment and nets.
  • Record information on collected items and waste.
  • Remove marine organisms from collected waste and return them to the sea.
  • Documenting and collecting information on wildlife in a monitored biodiversity zone.
  • Learn about and protect the marine ecosystem; collect and record information on biodiversity.
  • Volunteers who stay for at least two weeks will take the internationally recognized CMAS (World Underwater Federation) diving certifications.

If you don't know how to dive

The program is open to people who have never dived before. However, they will need to start their stay with dive training to obtain their certificate. This is an essential step towards safe participation in conservation activities. Once you've acquired some independence, usually during the second week, you can start to take part in garbage collection. If it's your first time diving and you have little or no experience, it's strongly recommended that you sign up for at least two weeks to ensure your participation in the marine conservation program. If you only stay for a week, you may not be able to take part in deep-sea diving.

If you are a certified diver

If you are already certified in scuba diving, our instructors will assess your skills so that you can begin to participate fully in the different parts of the program. You can start the program at any level of experience and obtain the next level of certification accordingly!
