Studying and protecting Hyenas in Tanzania

Get involved in a project to protect Hyenas while helping to reduce human-wildlife conflict in Tanzania's magnificent Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Nestled on the eastern shore of Lake Eyasi, our partner United Tansania's hyena research camp has a front-row seat to some of the most dynamic wildlife on the planet! The camp lies on a migration corridor between the Ngorongoro Crater and Manyara National Park. Its location is therefore unique for observing emblematic species such as buffalo, elephant, eland, zebra and impala. The area also provides an ecosystem conducive to the striped hyena, classified as near-threatened by the IUCN, as well as the more commonly observed spotted hyena. If you're ready to get involved in a hands-on conservation project, and aren't afraid of getting your hands dirty, this is the project for you!

Camera trapping, den identification, scat collection...

As an ecovolunteer, you'll work alongside our partner's team. You'll conduct field research and take part in exciting activities such as track surveys, camera trapping, den identification, scat collection for analysis, trap detection and clan monitoring. You'll play a key role in gathering data essential to understanding and protecting these wild animals.
Ecovolunteers take part in various missions including :

  • Raising awareness among the local population, in particular through interviews with boma (households), which helps to strengthen the relationship between inhabitants and wildlife.
  • Participation in our hyena habituation program, allowing you to get closer to the animals while contributing to their long-term protection.
  • Photographic identification and individual profiling of hyenas, to gain experience of tools such as GIS and R-Statistics.
  • Teaching at a local secondary school.
  • Throughout the year, special initiatives such as rabies eradication and sterilization programs for local communities offer a rare chance to contribute to both animal health and community well-being.

Depending on your skills and interests, volunteers can also help with photographic documentation, social media outreach, fundraising campaigns or even grant proposal writing.
The activities you'll take part in are as dynamic as the environment itself, and the program will vary according to the season and the ever-changing needs of research.
