Care and protection of turtles native to Ontario, Canada
Protect Ontario's native turtles! Take part in the protection and conservation of these turtles and their habitats in beautiful Canadian landscapes. The project in which you will be placed by our partner Fronteering runs a "turtle hospital" to treat, rehabilitate and release injured turtles. The project is also involved in conservation research and education programs to raise public awareness of the need to protect these land-dwelling turtles.
Turtle hospital
The project has an ecovolunteering program to help it carry out its mission. You can help the team in many different ways! Transporting injured turtles in need of rapid medical assistance, feeding, cleaning... Injured turtles generally spend up to a year in the refuge.
Turtles will be your priority! You'll help out according to your interests and skills. A number of tasks will be entrusted to you:
- Cleaning turtle basins
- Weighing turtles to monitor their health
- Feeding turtles
- Participation in public education and awareness programs
- Help with fundraising activities
- General maintenance of the hospital site: sweeping, grass cutting, tidying up work areas, preparing equipment for staff and volunteers.
- You can also take part in the release of turtles into their natural environment.
The work can be demanding and is not for you if you're looking for an easy vacation.

- Three meals a day
- Mail service; You can use the Fronteering office as your mailing address.
- Assistance (provided by Fronteering) in the event of a problem. You can contact Fronteering 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for assistance.
- Through Fronteering, you can book tours in Canada after completing your volunteer project.

- You must commit to a minimum of 4 weeks.
- From age 18
- English: intermediate level
- You must have an interest in the conservation of native wildlife (particularly reptiles) and be able to work under the direction of animal managers.
- You have to put up with sometimes difficult weather conditions, both cold and hot.
- Be able to live in an isolated area and perform outdoor tasks in which you get dirty.
- Always act professionally, because you represent an entire team.
- Smoking is not permitted on the property.
- A strong work ethic is required: reliability, responsibility, honesty, good sense of humor, dependability,
- Good physical and mental fitness.
- No pet allergies
- Proof of up-to-date tetanus vaccination and medical insurance
- Animal lover and experience welcome!
Accommodation and meals
You'll stay with a host family where you'll have your own bedroom, in-house laundry facilities, wireless internet, cable TV and 3 meals a day. Of course, you can also use the living room, kitchen and toilets. It's a great way to improve your English!
To bring
Clothes for cold weather in winter and light clothes for summer. Make sure these clothes can get dirty. Don't forget to bring gloves.
Comfortable walking shoes are essential, as are a raincoat and sun cream. Linen and towels will be provided.
Location
The project is located in Selwyn, Ontario, near Peterborough.
Arrival
You'll fly to Toronto airport, where you'll be transferred to your host family.

The project is located in Selwyn, Ontario, near Peterborough. There's a zoo, many parks and trails nearby. On your days off, you can visit Toronto or Oshawa. In summer, you can go hiking in the mountains and lakes of the region and, in winter, visit one of the local ski resorts. In the surrounding area, there are many opportunities to observe wildlife such as bald eagles, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, deer and coyotes.
